ASIMO the walking, talking robot

ASIMO the walking, talking robot

The first time I saw a video of ASIMO running, I was amazed. The first time I saw him (or perhaps her?) in real life, was at The Goodwood Festival of Speed. Sadly, he/she didn’t move but there are plenty of videos of ASIMO running, climbing stairs and even working out (check out the ASIMO TV site here to see ASIMO perform).

Honda engineers set out to create a walking robot in 1986 and at first, they developed a pair of legs which could walk like a human. Further developments added head, body and arms as well as superior walking skills, such as climbing stairs. You can find out more about how ASIMO has developed here since 1986 and what is anticipated for his/her future. It’s very exciting to think that “ASIMO might help with important tasks like assisting the elderly or a person confined to a bed or a wheelchair and also perform certain tasks that are dangerous to humans, such as fighting fires or cleaning up toxic spills.”

So, how would you feel about being cared for, by a robot? Would you like a robotic servant? There are, of course, many implications if this ever comes to be the norm.

It’s very hard to imagine how things will be in the future. I wonder if people from the Victorian times ever foresaw the advent of robots?

In my ebook, ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’, the protagonist, Daffodil, would have understood what a robot was as she is from the twenty-first century. It wouldn’t have been much point her discussing such things with her Victorian friends though! She even had to hide her digital watch! If you’d like to find out more, you can purchase the ebook here from the Muse It Up Publishing website or from any major ebook seller. The price is approximately £1.80 and all profits will go towards renovating and maintaining the ancient building of St. Nicholas Church, Laindon with Dunton where the story takes place. #MuseItUp #DaffodilAndTheThinPlace
