Hi, Reg here! And I’m so excited! What a fabulous weekend I had! On Friday night, the Old Girl and Old Boy took me to a concert performed by German Folk Band, Fricklesome Amsel. They were amazing. But don’t take my word for it, check them out on YouTube here. They are great people too and they even let me sing a solo (see photo) although when I turned round, they seemed to have gone.

Anyway, the Old Girl was supposed to go to a book launch of The Best of CafeLit 3 because she has a short story in it but the train service back from London was disrupted and she was afraid she’d get stranded, so she didn’t go. You can see the book here on Amazon.

So, she and I went to the rehearsals at St. Martin’s Church, Basildon instead, and I had a go at the technical stuff. There were screens, computers, lights, speakers, wires, knobs, tweakers and twiddlers and I had a go of all of them. I’m not sure if there was a power cut or something but things didn’t work too well for a short while after I turned one particular switch off, so I left the boys to it. Well, there were plenty of other things to do.

Here, you can see some of the actors in a pre-rehearsal planning session. They weren’t too keen on my ideas, so I thought I’d learn my lines instead and prepared to impress them with my thespian abilities. Every so often, I came across words that I couldn’t read, so I left them out. There is such a thing as having too many words in a script. Anyway, my version was shorter and if I say so myself, much snappier. The Old Girl said it was unintelligible. I don’t know what that means although it sounds a bit like ‘intelligent’, so I’ll assume it’s one of her fancy ways of saying that what I’d done with her script was very clever.

Here I am rehearsing with my acting friend, Christopher Walthorne who played the French bombardier, Louis Vallin. He was very interested in my method of only reading selected words from each sentence and I think in the future, he may try it. Well, it’s good to know I’ve taught a professional actor a thing or two. Although I was disappointed that he didn’t use it during the play – he spoke every single word in his part. Well, it takes a bit of practice to do the ‘read one, skip a few, read another’ method of acting correctly.

The actual performance of ‘The Sons of Three Countries Remembered’ was brilliant and as I looked around, I saw lots of eyes being wiped. The lady in front had come all the way from France to see the play and I later found out she is the daughter of Louis Vallin, the French service man that Christopher was playing. She met the Old Girl and thanked her, which made the Old Girl cry. Everyone seemed to have a great time despite the tears, and the Mayor of Basildon, representative of the Mayor of Heiligenhaus and the MP Stephen Metcalfe presented flowers and had their photos taken with DOT Productions, Fricklesome Amsel and the Old Girl. I’m a bit miffed they didn’t have their photos taken with me but you can’t win them all.

Well, sadly, the script isn’t available to read but if you would like, I can give you a link to take you to the Old Girl’s ebook, ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’. It’s here, on the Muse It Up Publishing website, if you’re interested. And if you’re not interested, be sure not to click here to go to the Muse It Up Publishing website.

After all the weekend’s excitement, I’m off to bed early…
