Rana temporaria, the common frog

Rana temporaria, the common frog – definitely batrachian

Word of the Day is ‘Batrachian’. It means ‘of or relating to frogs and toads’. For those of you familiar with Cockney Rhyming Slang, I don’t mean ‘batrachian’ relates to roads – I really do mean frogs and toads.

It’s not a word that I’ve ever used before and I may never have reason to use it again but it’s very useful if you find yourself writing a story containing a toad – which I am.

Of course, you may never find yourself in that position but if you do, you’ll be well prepared.

If you want to see where I used ‘batrachian’ and also the following words: tractor, flip flops, raincoat, can of hairspray, odd pair of socks, sombrero, fishing rod, mouldy bread, moon and bottle containing noxious liquid, you can find it here.

Using at least ten words from a list of twenty-five random words was the challenge from my writing group and I really wanted to write a horror story containing the word ‘gramophone’ but in the end, it didn’t turn out that way at all.

The story I finally wrote is an absurd fantasy. I’m not sure if ‘absurd fantasy’ is a real genre but it’ll have to do.

Well, at least I have expanded my vocabulary by one word – Batrachian.

And, as it turns out, I’ve also added three more stories to ‘The Sweet Smell of Success’ and now plan to continue with the characters until it’s book-length. The working title is ‘Her Ladyship’s Private Parts’.

If you’d like to read something else that I’ve written, why not read the ebook ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’. To buy a copy, click here to go to the Muse It Up Publishing website. The price is approximately £1.80 and all profits will go towards renovating and maintaining the ancient building of St. Nicholas Church, Laindon with Dunton where the story takes place. #MuseItUp #DaffodilAndTheThinPlace
