Reg’s Dlog:

What would you expect to find in a laboratory? Test tubes, beakers, bunsen burners? Well, not in the one I was in yesterday. It was full of brilliant arty stuff.

The Laboratory is in Wat Tyler Country Park, Pitsea, Essex and is the art studio of Lisa Smith who is the project manager of the Forget Never, Oublier Jamais, Vergessen Niemals Project. And what a brilliant place it is! You can find out more here, on Lisa’s website, if you like.

At one time, there was a factory in the Wat Tyler Country Park area which made explosives and the building where Lisa has her art studio was a laboratory – hence the name. I googled the factory but couldn’t find a lot out. However, as your roving reporter, I may soon be able to get some more info for you because the Old ‘Un’s may be taking me to Heiligenhaus to see the World War One exhibition that is currently in Meaux. It will be taken to Germany in the next few weeks. There are several posters with information about the explosives factory in the exhibition and I shall seek them out and get the Old Girl to read them to me.

I got so carried away in the Laboratory, I nearly signed up for water colour lessons but I don’t think paws are much good at holding brushes. I wonder if Lisa does paw painting? Or perhaps she needs a life model. On second thoughts, I’m not taking my scarf off for anyone. And that includes people with pencils.

While you wait for me to come back with details about the explosives factory, there is a story you can read which takes place in another building in Basildon, Essex. It’s the Old Girl’s ebook ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’ which takes place in St. Nicholas Church, Laindon, Essex. It’s a place that’s well worth a visit. If only to see the weird staircase in the annexe. And of course, it’s an ebook well worth reading. The story is made up but some of the characters really existed and of course, the building is still there. You can get a copy from your favourite ebook retailer or from the Muse It Up Publishing website here. Money raised from sales of the ebook will go towards the upkeep of St. Nicholas Church.
