That title might sound like I’m hunting dragons but actually, my dragons are very easy to find, if you know where to look. I bet most people don’t even notice them when the go into St. Nicholas Church because they’re quite high above the door. But, isn’t it strange how you can look at something frequently, without actually seeing it? I’ve looked at the dragons many times but I only noticed the funny little face in the corner of the left hand dragon carving for the first time this week. It looks a little bit like a smiling sun or moon or even a smiley face. Perhaps it’s an ancient emoticon.

The dragons are a bit of a puzzle although I expect someone out in Internet Land knows something about them.

As well as the smiley face, the carving on the left has a shell which I think is the sign of pilgrimage, so perhaps St. Nicholas Church was once on the pilgrimage route to Canterbury.

The dragon on the right appears to have two crosses on his back or perhaps he’s been impaled by a large letter ‘H’.

All very mysterious.

If you know, please get in touch.

And in the meantime, if you want to help the church raise funds to carry out much needed renovations, you can donate here or you could buy the Old Girl’s book ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’. It’s available here in ebook format from Muse it Up Publishing website or here in paperback. All royalties will go to the renovation fund. And don’t forget, if you’re in the area of Laindon, Essex, why not drop in and view the dragons yourself.
