Daffodil and the Thin Place 300dpiReg’s Dlog (Well, what else would you call a dog’s blog?)

The other day, the Old Girl was listening to BBC Radio 4 and she heard someone mention a theory that if you read page 69 of any book, you’ll have some idea about whether you’ll like the whole story.

I’m writing a book and I haven’t reached page 69 yet. I’m not even sure I’ve got enough to say to fill 69 pages. But the person on the radio didn’t say how large the writing was or how small the pages. So there’s still hope.

Anyway, I’ve copied and pasted page 69 of the Old Girl’s ebook, ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’ just in case you haven’t read it yet, so you can make up your mind if you’ll like it. You will like it, of course.

…Mark and Jacob intercept them, so the only danger we face is that you will still be digging at first light.”

What are they doing? I wondered

As if she’d heard my thoughts, Amelia whispered “They’re robbing graves. Be careful, Daffodil. They will be ruthless.”

But before I could take this in, the lantern-bearer swung round nervously, raising the lantern to light the shadowy shape that emerged from the undergrowth not far from where I crouched.

I recognised the stocky figure immediately.

It was Josiah Clement.

He was carrying a bundle under his arm, which he handed to the man with the lantern, and after a short conversation, in voices so low I couldn’t hear a word, the boy and the man walked to where the others were digging. After exchanging a few words with the men, Josiah headed back into the woods.

Grumbling softly, the men took their spades and began digging again,

providing the noise I needed to hide my footsteps as I crept to the next bush and the next, until I’d reached the end of the graveyard and begun to move through the shadows to the final side of the church.

My watch showed it was almost 12:01. There were seconds left for me to complete the third circuit, so in a last desperate effort, I crept as fast as I could, making for the path.

And I might well have made it, but as I jumped onto the path, Josiah stepped out of the undergrowth ahead of me, with hands on hips.

“Well, well, well,” he said “what ‘ave we ‘ere then? Out for a bit o’ fresh air, are we?”

One of the men grabbed me from behind, putting his arm round my throat and jerking my head back painfully. The smell of chloroform wafted through the night…

I think it’s really exciting but I’m not sure because I’m still learning to read and there are a lot of words on page 69 that I haven’t yet come across. So, here’s my request – I’d be really grateful if you could read the above excerpt and then let me know what it’s all about. I’d be your friend for life. And a dog is for life, not just for one story.

If it’s whet your appetite, you can buy the ebook ‘Daffodil and the Thin Place’ here from the Muse It Up Publishing website or from your favourite ebook retailer.
